Luis Ludovic Garcia Camarero
A surrealist painter born in Spain in 1959, trained in Madrid and settled in Cluj county, Romania — where he paints, restores paintings and teaches open-air painting.
From Madrid to Frata: a painter’s journey
Luis Ludovic Garcia Camarero was born on 23 October 1959, in a small town in the province of Madrid, Spain. He drew from an early age, and at eighteen he earned a scholarship to an art school in Madrid, where he studied academic drawing, oil and acrylic technique, and the discipline of painting restoration.
That classical training remained his foundation: however free his imagination, his works are rigorously built in composition and light. Onto this base settled, from the 1980s onward, a fascination with surrealism — the world of dream, of the subconscious, of the symbol.
For many years he has lived and worked in Romania, in Cluj county. In Frata, a village about 35 km from Cluj-Napoca, he opened an art gallery where he exhibits permanently and welcomes visitors, collectors and students. Here too is his garden — fruit trees and vegetables grown without chemicals — where the open-air painting workshops take place.
Six themes that return in Luis’s art
Intense colour, elongated faces and recurring symbols. Every painting begins with a question about the human being and ends in an image that stays with you.
Figurative surrealism
Characters with elongated faces, almond eyes and frozen gestures, set in dreamlike spaces. The real is recognisable, but its rules are suspended.
The woman as archetype
Women with hats, mother-figures, models, mythical “iele”: the feminine figure carries emotion, fertility and mystery through many of the compositions.
The eye and the cosmos
The eye holding the Earth, concentric circles, the arc of light a family passes under — symbols of consciousness and of the gaze that contains the world.
Exodus and human drama
The series dedicated to Ukraine (2022) — “The Exodus”, “Ukrainian Melancholy” — speaks of uprooting, sacrifice and hope, without pathos.
The spiritual and the existential
Death, love, the crossing of a threshold: “Crossing the Threshold of Eternity” (2023) or “The Transcendence of Love” place the human being before the great questions.
Transylvania seen from a dream
Wooden churches under snow, reapers on sun-scorched fields, night fishing at Broșteni — the Transylvanian landscape enters the paintings transfigured.
